What your sleep evaluation includes
Your sleep pattern
We review when you go to bed, how long it takes to fall asleep, night wakings, and how you feel during the day. A short sleep diary often helps.
Mental health connections
Anxiety, depression, ADHD, and trauma commonly disrupt sleep, and poor sleep makes each of them worse. We look at both sides.
Physical and medication factors
Caffeine, alcohol, cannabis, some medications, pain, hormonal changes, and low iron can all interfere with sleep. We review these and labs when indicated.
Treatment options
Treatment usually starts with the recommended first-line approach for chronic insomnia: cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) strategies such as a consistent sleep schedule, rebuilding the link between bed and sleep, and calming an overactive mind at night. When medication is appropriate, we choose carefully, use the lowest effective dose, and plan for how long you will take it.
Common questions
Can insomnia be treated through telehealth?
Yes. Sleep problems are evaluated and treated by secure video for adults located in New York State at the time of each visit.
Will I be prescribed a sleeping pill?
Not automatically. Behavioral strategies are the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. Medication can help in some situations, and we decide together based on your history and goals.
